Invisible Heroes: Every Step of Ground Service Reflects Care Beyond What the Eye Can See

Stories from Ground Services: The People Behind Every Journey
A memorable journey begins long before takeoff and continues beyond landing. From the moment passengers arrive at the airport, a dedicated team works behind the scenes to coordinate services, provide support, and resolve challenges at every stage of their journey.
In busy terminals, with boarding deadlines fast approaching, Ground Services staff work against the clock to keep every journey accurate, safe, and on schedule. Their responsibilities include welcoming passengers, checking travel documents, handling baggage, assisting travelers with special needs, coordinating boarding, and supporting passengers upon arrival.
Passengers may see only the public-facing side of Ground Services check-in, baggage acceptance, and assistance at departure gates but every task demands precision and sound judgment. Behind the scenes, the team verifies documents, supports passengers requiring special assistance, evaluates medical travel needs, and coordinates essential medical paperwork when required.
In aviation, even a minor oversight can disrupt passengers and flight operations. Ground Services teams must therefore uphold strict safety standards while keeping flights on time and delivering high-quality service.
When travel plans are disrupted by delays, document issues, missed connections, or individual passenger needs, Ground Services personnel are often the first to listen, explain the situation, coordinate support, and identify the most appropriate solution.
Under Bangkok Airways’ Boutique Service philosophy, success means more than simply getting passengers to their destinations. It means providing consistent care and thoughtful attention from arrival to departure.
Stories from Ground Services
Supawadee Sanprasert
Supervisor Passenger Services
Ground Services operations bring a different challenge every day. For Supawadee, one of the most delicate responsibilities is caring for Unaccompanied Minors (UM) children between five and twelve who fly without a parent or guardian.
The process starts long before the child boards. At the departure station, parents or guardians must complete and sign consent forms that clearly name two people: whoever brings the child to the airport, and whoever is authorized to collect the child at the other end. From there, Ground Services staff take over, staying close to the child until they can be safely handed to the cabin crew.
On arrival, the receiving Ground Services team picks up where departure left off the child is released only after the designated guardian's identity has been verified and the paperwork is complete.
"A five-year-old is still so young. Being pulled away from their parents and dropped into an unfamiliar place can be a lot for them to handle. Some cry. Others go quiet, or get scared. Our job isn't just to move them through the process we become their companion for the whole journey, staying close, helping however they need, and keeping their parents updated so the child never feels like they're alone," Supawadee said.
To her, moments like these are proof that Ground Services isn't only about procedure. It's about earning the trust of passengers and their families.
Another case shows a different side of the job entirely: helping Inadmissible Passengers (INAD) travelers turned away at the border over visa problems, missing documents, or other immigration issues.
When this happens, airlines are responsible for the passenger's welfare while working with immigration officials, embassies, and other authorities to find a way forward that satisfies the regulations and keeps the passenger safe.
Supawadee remembers one case that dragged on for weeks. The passenger could neither continue their journey nor return home right away, so the Ground Services team stepped in with meals, clothing, hotel arrangements, and everyday welfare support while several authorities deliberated on what to do.
"All we could really do was make sure they were taken care of while everyone worked toward a solution. We stayed in constant contact with the organizations involved, and we made sure the passenger knew they weren't going through this alone. It took a long time, and it wasn't simple, but we stuck with it until we found a way to get them home safely."
It's a side of Ground Services that most travelers never see the quiet work of standing between people, rules, and authorities, in situations where there's no easy answer.
Treechada Tuankhrua
Deputy Manager, Ground Services
Another challenge Ground Services deals with is managing uncertainty while still meeting passenger expectations especially with Standby Passengers, a group that includes airline employees and travelers flying on Zonal Employee Discount (ZED) tickets under interline agreements between airlines.
The rule for standby travel is simple but unforgiving: passengers can only board once every confirmed passenger has been seated. During peak season, or on a fully booked flight, that can mean hours of waiting with no guarantee of flying that day at all.
It's a situation that naturally breeds anxiety and frustration. For Bangkok Airways' Ground Services team, the priority isn't just telling passengers whether a seat opened up it's being upfront about where things stand, so travelers can actually plan around it.
"While passengers are waiting, our staff keep giving them updates where things stand, what their odds look like. If a flight is clearly full, we point them toward other options, or suggest a better time to come back and try standby again the next day," said Treechada Tuankhrua, Deputy Manager, Ground Services.
"To us, it doesn't matter what kind of ticket someone is traveling on," she added."Once they're standing in front of us, they're our passenger. What matters most is that they're never left waiting in the dark."
Beyond What Meets the Eye
Ground Services' success is usually measured by what passengers never have to think about: bags that show up at the right destination, documents checked and cleared, connections made without a hitch, problems solved before they ever become problems.
Behind that ease sits a team of professionals whose work runs on expertise, precision, coordination, and quick decisions made under pressure.
Ground Services staff are far more than the faces passengers see at check-in counters or departure gates. They're part of what keeps every flight safe, on time, and running well and sometimes, the most meaningful care they provide is the kind no one ever notices.
For Ground Services, that's the real measure of success: taking everything complicated happening behind the scenes and turning it into a trip that feels simple, safe, and worth remembering.
Behind these smooth experiences are countless professionals whose work demands expertise, precision, coordination, and sound decision-making under time pressure.
Ground Services staff are far more than the people passengers see behind check-in counters or at departure gates. They are among the essential forces that help maintain safety, punctuality, and service excellence across every flight. Sometimes, the most meaningful acts of care are the ones passengers never notice at all.
For Ground Services, the ultimate achievement is transforming complex operations behind the scenes into a travel experience that feels simple, safe, and memorable for every passenger.
