Business innovation for the environment

Bangkok Airways gives a new life to its used uniforms using upcycling techniques to transform used clothes into a new collection of “boutique-design products”

The Company initiated a used uniforms upcycling project, where we invited our staff to donate their used uniforms so that we can have those old uniforms transformed into new products through upcycling processes. This project not only promotes the idea of circular economy as we take something already made and then turn it into a new item to use in our business, which is a limited-edition apron for our airport lounge agents but also emphasizes our “Love Earth, Save Earth” campaign where we focus on climate change management and waste management.

The used uniforms upcycling project is a collaboration between Bangkok Airways and Circular Industry Company Limited, where 150 kilograms of used uniforms were color-sorted and underwent the process of producing new fabrics without bleaching to avoid making a negative impact on the environment, including PM2.5 particles that might occur during a process of dissolving used uniforms. Upcycling is the creative recovery of materials of any kind, fabrics, or garments, the techniques transform used clothes into new and environmentally friendly products. Some of the products from our upcycling project are 300 pieces of products including aprons, cloth bags, and water cup bags. This is equivalent to 307.44 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) if we use the traditional way of dissolving used clothes. Moreover, it also helps to save around 1,826 kilowatts/hour of electricity.
